Cool site! I am sad to see all of the disappearing payphones in Springfield Mo. I have also heard that AT&T is getting out of the payphone business by the end of this year! I am trying to find out what they are going to do with all the payphones, but have had no luck! I will be sad to see the payphone meet it's end, but I guess it was inevitable with all the damn cell phones out there. I hope you keep the site going for all the payphone fans out there

Thanks to your efforts we were able to confirm that a certain phone number on an order was indeed fraudulent and was as we suspected a pay phone. We did not ship the merchandise as nothing else checked out either, but thanks for doing this! You are a great resource for merchants who suspect that fraud is being committed.

Thanks for the tones. By conbining the three disconnect tones with the repeat dialing call I was able to stop a credit card company from constantly autodialing my computer number. This obviously tricked them into thinking the line was disconnected when it reallly isn't. Thanks again. Al

I have needed to use payphones for a number of different reasons, none emergencys, but I've come across many payphones that do not connect my call. There is a dial tone and I can dial the number I need to call but when the person picks up the phone they can't here me. I'm concerned because if any of those phone calls were an emergency I wonder if the police would be able to here me.

Hi there, I'm extremely amazed that I found a site that records Tele. #'s just like I do !!...I thought I was alone, but I reallized you and others share the same hobby to. I found your site while I was surfing for Hollywood, California info. cause I'm going there for a few weeks soon. What also impressed me was the fact that your style of recording the locations of Boots is the same as I record them...I thought I was looking at my work. SPOOookkKKYY. I started about 10 years ago in Montreal mostly & gathered hundreds of numbers on my spare time, mainly because I was getting many crank calls and one day I discovered that some were coming from close by to my place & I also hate NOT knowing who is calling me on my caller ID. I also programmed about 100 close-by #s in my cell phone (clubs, restos., etc.) so when a call comes in it shows it's location to. I've got MANY other stories relating to this but I won't bore you any longer. CONGRADS AGAIN !! & hopefully you'll keep running this intelligent unique system of yours. Thanks for the rundown on the data string from the Protel (and sorry for the double-post last time; refresh booboo). Most of the COCOTs in my general of area are of the "Thank You, Do-do-de-do" type (Intellicall). In fact, one of them, a few years ago wanted 90¢ for an 800 number! And if I dialed an 888 number, it went, "This call cannot be completed from this phone (been fixed since then)!" On another note, I've found a few callable Verizon (Telco) phones that will answer w/ a modem tone (sounds like a 300-baud) after 8 or so rings but it fails to connect when I dial w/ my modem. Proprietary modem tones? An example is 617-774-1182 (submitted to directory, BTW, along w/ some others).

It looks like this string: 0311253015004 Is the time and date, Year 03, month 11, date 25, time 3:30pm, 4=? The other sets of numbers might have something to do with the software version in the phone, the serial number, maybe how many calls were made since it was last serviced, and maybe somewhere how much money it has in it, or how much money in call charges (operator assist, collect, etc) went through it.

Wow, great sute. Ringing payphones is a load of fun. But here's a little fun: If you've ever called a Cocot, notice that they more often than not answer after one or two rings and then give of a long tone? Well, after a bit of messing around, I discovered that it's a modem tone using the ancient 300-baud Bell103 protocol. So ring one (I used a few in Pictures section as an example) using a modem and a terminal program (i.e. HyperTerminal in Windows) and let it connect; it'll give something like this: ATDT15095769961 CONNECT 300 T?!*5095769961*60645*DD4318*1053*002*0311253015004*60195ÆTNV After the "CONNECT 300" the phone sends that string of digits and garbage characters. The first digit set is the number, any ideas on the rest? NO CARRIER

I hope I am putting this in the right guest book but a lady had a comment about the #678-309-9999 anyway....I get alot of calls from that number.....usually one day a week but 5 or 6 times in that one day......I assume it is from a calling card......everytime I have tried to call it back it says the number is disconnected and it doesn't sound like someone at a payphone. I am delighted with the treasure trove of "phonobilia" found here. I am attempting to develop a community access manual for adults with disabilities who need training in community living skills. Using a pay phone is a daunting assignment for the uniintiated, made all the more complicated by illegible use directions, robotic voices, mall "reverb" and sloping shelves that won't hold coins, wallets, purses or slips of paper with numbers you want to dial. The ADA should throttle the (sadistic)designers and (mercenary)private companies that are responsible for the public phones that are anything but. Thanks for vent!
